General Information on Portrait Pricing
The cost of a commissioned portrait depends largely on the size, medium, and design (for instance, the choice of head and shoulders or full figure, the complexity of background requested, or the number of subjects).
Here are some examples of cost based only on size and medium:
16" x 20" portrait (head & shoulders), pastel.....................................................................................................$1,200
16" x 20" portrait (head and shoulders),oil on canvas.................................................................................................$1,500
16" x 20" full figure, oil on canvas.....................................................$1,800
Additional subjects will increase costs by 50%. Travel expenses, shipping, framing and taxes are additional as warranted.
A successful portrait always requires close collaboration and advance groundwork between the artist and the subject. Following a preliminary discussion to determine setting, size and price, an appointment will be arranged for a photo session. The best photos usually are made within the subject's comfort zone and should take no more than an hour and a half to complete. During the photo session, notes are made regarding personality, expression, and coloration for reference as the work progresses. A preliminary drawing will be prepared at the start for discussion and approval. Once a composition has been approved, a deposit of 50% will be due, with the balance to be paid upon completion.
